Shankou mangrove biosphere reserve is one of the five national oceanic reserves and the second nation mangrove nature reserve in China. Its coastline is 50 kilometers long and the total area in 8000 square kilometers. It has fertile mudflats, clean water, rich sunshine, fewer disturbances by low temprature, waves or tides, so mangroves are flourish in this area. It become a member of Man and Biosphere reserves in 1993.
